The Politics of Women's Health: Exploring Agency and Autonomy by Susan Sherwin,

The Politics of Women's Health: Exploring Agency and Autonomy by Susan Sherwin,
A collaborative exploration of the practical issues of women's empowerment in the health care system and the deep assumptions and values that underlie that system For four years an interdisciplinary group of scholars and practitioners, including physicians, lawyers, philosophers, and social scientists, collaborated closely on the development of these essays. They also experienced many of the issues of women's health in their personal lives: three gave birth, three entered menopause, and two underwent major surgery; some provided care for their mothers and grandmothers. The authors examine both the real world of women's health status and health care delivery in different countries and the assumptions behind the dominant medical model of solving problems without regard to social conditions. The book is not organized around types of medical interventions; instead, its thrust is to ask what feminist health care ethics looks like if we start with women's experiences and concerns. The authors unravel two key concepts of women's experiences and concerns. The authors unravel two key concepts of women's empowerment -- agency and autonomy -- that apply to all areas of concern to women.

African American Women and Poverty: Can Education Alone Change the Status Quo? by Catherine M. Casserly,
African American Women and Poverty: Can Education Alone Change the Status Quo? by Catherine M. Casserly,
Health care policy and proposals for national health care reform have become some of the most contentious political issues of the decade. Garland Publishing announces a new series addressing the most significant issues in the area of health care policy and the business of health care in the United States. books in this multidisciplinary series will include studies of health care practice, the health care business, the implications of multicultural perspectives on health care for public policy, the impact of insurance on health care, and debates over national health care policy, including health care reform. This collection of timely works will offer significant scholarly perspectives on one of the most important issues in public policy. An unfulfilled promise This book examines why educational investments by African American women, the group in American society that is most susceptible to being poor, have not reduced poverty as expected. In the United States, public policies rely heavily on education as the powerful mechanism by which economic opportunity will be provided. However, although African American women followed the prescription set forth by human capital theory and increased their educational attainment from the late 1960s to the late 1980s, the promised payoffs to additional schooling did not materialize. An important indirect effect The analysis in this study reveals that the ability of human capital investment to alleviate poverty for African American women differs depending on whether one estimates private or social returns. In the individual-level analysis, education is a strong negative determinant of poverty and is equally sensitive for each time periodstudied. Education is also a critical mediating variable between family of origin, teen birth, and poverty, suggesting its important indirect effect on women's later economic prosperity.

Indeed, reports of research that was unethical or at least questionable continue to surface today. The stories of these pioneering women, told in clear and compelling prose, are fascinating and even inspiring. The pioneering figures presented here have forged new paths for women in the state generally since, although there was discrimination and resistance to accepting them, their accomplishments paralleled and in some instances led the development of medical practice and specialization. There have been more than 2,000,000 (two million) members in service each year. At first, the goal of equal representation in health research seems obviously laudable and relatively easy to reach. But adding more female subjects to research raises questions about science, legal liability, and governmental policies - and recalls the forces that may have led to women's exclusion. Efforts to protect research subjects continued in the state generally since, although there was discrimination and resistance to accepting them, their accomplishments paralleled and in some instances led the development of medical practice and specialization. There have been more than 250,000 members since 1994. In fact, measures enacted as protection were now seenas paternalistic. Their stories reveal the special obstacles they faced and overcame as women practicing in a demanding, traditionally all-male field. Using vignettes and biographical details garnered from sparse available literature, newspaper archives, typescripts found in various libraries around the state, and interviews, Elizabeth Silverthorne and Geneva Fulgham have created profiles of women ranging from nursing, pharmacy, public health, and dentistry to general and hospital practice, hospice care, virology, surgery, and psychiatry.
